The Pros and Cons of Gun Control in the United States Essay

Gun control is a growing issue as of late, due to recent events such as school shootings as well as crimes which are committed daily due to gun violence the issue has been more controversial than ever before. IT is true that by owing a gun you can feel a sense of self- empowerment as it can allow you to protect yourself as well as your loved ones. However, owing a gun is a double edge sword in today’s world. The reason is that with the sudden increase in gun violence more people have beganbegun to become anti-gun. The government does help by passing laws which will not allow certain people to own or buy guns. The problem with that type of situation is that those people can still own guns by going through a third party in order to receive†¦show more content†¦The biggest pro when it comes to owning a gun is the sense of security and protection it allows you to obtain being a homeowner or family member. It allows you to understand that if you are being burglarized or i f somebody does try to break into your home a gun provides you a way to protect yourself as well as your family. It is a fact that 74% of burglars stay away from homes are occupied by those who own guns due to the fear of what could happen. The best part about owning a gun is you can keep burglars or vandals at bay without even having to fire your gun;, just the sight of a gun will keep people from trying to break into your homes. Now for the con side of this debate, first I would have to say that having a gun is extremely risky. There is danger associated with owning a gun. You can be foolish and leave your gun where children may have access to it which can lead to more pressing issues. This is why when small children are in the house keep your guns hidden and do not allow them to know where these guns are. Also I wo9uld like to say that video games which incorporate gun violence can put ideas in a child’s head that guns are fun. This is far from the truth as guns are not fun and should not be viewed as a fun hobby to get into, especially by younger children. Another con to consider when owning a gun is the risk of harming friend, neighbor, or even a family member by accident. Romeo and Juliet is a classic playwright written by William Shakespeare. Everyone gets the chance to study his work at some point in their career, whether in grade school or in college. On February 24th, I attended the production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at Theatre UCF on the UCF main campus. The play ran longer than I initially thought it was going to be. It started at 7:30 P.M. and ended three hours later around 10:30 P.M. Romeo and Juliet is a classic love story of two people who should not fall in love, but end up do. Unfortunately, some lives are lost along the way. Shakespeare utilized tone to convey Romeo and Juliet as a tragic love story. The play itself is very contrasting, on one level the Capulets and†¦show more content†¦As a director, Belinda C. Boyd, took a 1930s approach to the classic Romeo and Juliet. I found that it was very easy to pin point as the actors’ costumes were inspired by the 1930s. There was an announcement at the beginning of the play that mentioned the eighteenth amendment which prohibited the sale of alcohol, this lead to the assumption that the play was set in a speakeasy. In the 1930s, there were no laws that prohibited smoking indoors, therefore many of the actors had costume cigarettes that emitted water vapor to look like smoke. Ultimately, every element was cohesive and matched the theme that Boyd was going for, everything from the set design, to costumes, and makeup. Boyd also staged the play really well. When the Capulets’ had a party in the speakeasy, there were many actors on stage to make it look like an extravagant party that you, as an audience member, wanted to be of attendance. However during fighting scenes, I found it a little distracting with so many actors on stage. Very often I did not know where I should look as there was a lot going on at once. In addition, the actors seemed very comfortable on staged and moved around the set with ease and no mistakes. Overall, Boyd staged her actors in places where it made sense and flowed throughout the entire performance. Furthermore, if the actors do not fit their roles then the whole play can suffer. The Sun, the Moon, and the Great Spirit Long ago, before there was life, before there was even a planet Earth, there were celestial entities that existed in the universe back when it was a light blue. These spirits appear to humans as large masses in space, such as the other planets and the stars. Since the beginning, there were two powerful apparitions that would become rivals until the end of time, the Sun Spirit and the Moon Spirit. Not long after all of the spirits of the universe were created by the Great Spirit, their creator who cannot be seen by any life form, the Sun had become the leader of all other celestial bodies and was placed in the center of the Solar System. This angered the Moon, who despised the Sun. The Moon Spirit challenged the Sun for the position as ruler of the planets. Unfortunately for the Moon, the Sun used his superior strength to outcast the Moon to a lonely location between Venus and Mars. After 4,000 years of peace among the bodies of the Solar System, the Sun was growing old and developed a feeling that something was missing. The Sun Spirit decided that it was time for him to create a new successor since he has aged and become weak over time. The Sun found stray meteors flying across space and summoned all of his remaining power to bring them to him. The aging Sun then smashed the colossal space rocks together to create one large mass. Afterwards, he engulfed the inanimate boulder with his life-giving fire to give it consciousness. â€Å"Who are you? Who am I? † said the curious new planet. â€Å"I am the Sun, your creator and protector. You are my daughter who will one day grow up to take my place as ruler of everything in existence,† said the Sun to his newborn child. â€Å"Well, do I have a name? † the naive child asked. â€Å"I shall name you ‘Earth’,† said the Sun. For many days, the cosmos celebrated the birth of their beloved king’s child. Eventually, the news spread so far that it got to the Moon Spirit. The Lunar Spirit then schemed the perfect plan to get revenge on the Sun. The Moon waited until all of the other entities fell asleep to sneak out of his seal. He eventually found the sleeping solar king and his princess. The Moon then kidnapped her and brought her to where the Sun had banished him. Child Earth woke up with a loud scream, constantly calling for her father. To silence her, the Moon engulfed her in such a great amount of water that she would never be able to speak again. When the Sun woke up, he looked around for his daughter; she was nowhere to be found. The King began to panic and told every spirit in the universe to look out for the young princess. Not long after, Venus confronted the Sun and said, â€Å"I know where your daughter is. She has been taken away by the twisted Moon and can no longer speak. This news made the Sun so furious, his fire grew to be so large that it gave off the largest glow anyone had ever seen. The powerful light from the glow began to illuminate all parts of the Solar System including the Moon and Earth. The Sun was now able to see his captive daughter, but had no strength left to pull her back to him. From that day on, all of the celestial entities mourne d for the loss of their future queen. To show their consolation for the Sun, they all decided to use their combined power to turn space from a sky blue color to black for the second half of every day. To make matters worse, the Moon confronted the Sun to make a proposition. â€Å"If you stand down from your position as king, I will let you have your daughter. If not, then I will force you to stand down,† explained the Moon. The Sun Spirit refused to give up his position. The Moon then declared war on the Sun, but immediately after doing so, the Great Spirit appeared for the first time since the birth of the universe. The two rivals were struck with awe. The Great Spirit refused to let the universe spiral into chaos because of the Sun and Moon’s conflict. In order to please them both, he gave the Sun his daughter for half of a day, but when the Sun falls asleep, the Moon would take ownership. Whenever her father would leave and the Moon would come, the Earth would try to break free of her liquid entrapment, causing the tides to rise. In addition, the Great Spirit went to the Earth and planted a massive green tree on her that would grow from both the soil from the sun and the water from the moon.
